28” X 24” LEPE—SCENIC WITH JESUS. This rare early oil on Canvas is in excellent condition. It is a modern yet very spiritual, moving painting for all people.
Custom Modernist Original frame with cloth insert border and white wood liner by Leopoldo Perez (b. 1937), known by his signature “Lepe,” born in Santo Domingo in 1937 and a member of the “for Tres” he studied at the Santo Domingo National School of Fine Arts, where he won the “Trujillo Grand Prize” for painting in 1959 and a second pricer sculpture at the same time. After graduating, he traveled to the United States, where he lived for three years, and exhibited in various group shows from New York to Miami. Lepe received a scholarship to expand his studies in Spain, where he studied at the School of Pottery and Drawing of the Curculio de Bellas Artes in Madrid, Spain.
Lepe is a pillar of the National School of Fine Arts. He graduated from and taught there for many years. He also completed a postgraduate degree in Spain, where he exhibited successfully in Madrid.
Extremely serious from the beginning, he has made a pictorial work that is mainly attached to expressionism and the human condition.
In the 1980s, he exalted the local color of the typology of his characters, in their attitudes and simple trades, illuminated by a solar chromaticism and impregnated with Spirituality.
That said, he asked for a substantial invoice (costly at the time), was considered a very skillful brushstroke artist, and always had impeccable drawings orchestrated in his paintings.
He has turned towards a certain mysticism and supernatural concerns, adopting a palette that is always bright but more austere. Due to his caution and self-demand, he presents few individual exhibitions, although he has been invited to many exhibitions with others he has attended.
A Unique and FANTASTIC rendition of Jesus, with flags against sailing boats and nets on a beach with a deeply expressionist face in an art nouveau style displayed all over Spain on the architecture and fabulous colors, and has a deep emotional resonance.
His works are hard to get but cross many lines of interest. c.1960-70, in excellent original condition, Oil on Canvas signed lower left “Lepe.”
His modernist style is still very intimate to the viewer, and his sensitive paintings exude a spiritual quality.
